Hiking & Biking General Info
Welcome to Kitimat and all of its wonderful outdoor adventure.
This information was gathered to assist you, the outdoor enthusiast, in enjoying your adventure both safely and memorably. All of the trails are marked and traveled by residents of Kitimat and the surrounding area. However, please be aware that the trails are all rustic and are subject to windfall. They are good for walking and biking single file.
Hiking and Biking in Bear Country
You have now entered into bear, moose, deer, fox, porcupine and skunk country! It is recommended that you carry bear bells, Bear spray or an air horn with you. Singing, rocks in a can and loud noises also work well. Please also keep your dog on a leash, as dogs have been known to go and bring back a bear to greet you!
It is also strongly advised that you never hike alone or separate from your party. You will notice while you are hiking that the Trees are large and our forest can be dense. Know your whereabouts and carry a Compass & Map or GPS all the time.
Most of the trails are suitable for both the hiker and mountain biker. However, if you are biking you must give way to the hikers on foot.
Take only photographs. Leave only footprints.
Always wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes. Always be prepared for swampy spots on the trails. Running shoes may not be your best choice of footwear. Pack proper clothing; layering is suggested. Remember to bring: wind protection, hat, extra socks, sunscreen and gloves, and don’t forget the TP.
Always carry an adequate supply of food and fresh water. Drinking from streams is not recommended as they may contain harmful bacteria. Always take a Map & Compass or GPS and matches in a water proof container.
Please keep our trails beautiful for the next person. What you take in, please pack out with you. Keep to the designated trails; this protects plant life and assists animals in adapting to human movement.
Make allowances for the fact that this is a logging region. Logging roads are dangerous and often busy on weekdays. When driving on logging roads remember to keep your lights on. Remember that logging trucks always have the right of way
